Joseph CARELLA
Dancer
Joseph received a grant to participate in the Camping project organized by the Centre National de la Danse.
What is your artistic background ?
My artistic background started with music (drums, piano), then it moved to dancing. My style of dance is called “FLEXN” (a Reggae, Dance Hall-based style that started in Brooklyn, NY). Between music and dancing, these tools helped me to express myself in my daily life. This isn’t just a hobby, it’s a way of living.
How do you see your profession today ?
My view on my profession today is an observant one. When I was coming up, dance had opportunities, but it was pushed down and looked upon as a job that couldn't make you super successful. Nowadays dancing has become one of the biggest platforms for that purpose. As a person who is pushing a style (FLEXN), it's my job to make sure the whole world knows about this style and acknowledges it.
How do you see yourself in five years ? In 10 years ?
In 5-10 years, I see myself being established as a dancer/artist, traveling all over the world and combining cultures together to create one big universal vibe. I'm not going to just see it happen. I am going to make it happen.
